NEF
and USGBC announce LEED certification for Daybreak Elementary
School recieves
silver LEED award for it's design
Salt Lake City, UT- National Energy Foundation
(NEF) in conjunction with The United States Green Building
Council (USGBC) announced the Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) certification of Daybreak Elementary School on
Tuesday October 24th. NEF and the USGBC also educated students
about energy conservation and how they can improve their own
personal energy use. LEED certification is the most credible
green building rating system set by the USGBC and there are
currently only nine LEED certified buildings in the state of
Utah. There are three levels of LEED certification: platinum,
gold and silver. Daybreak Elementary received the silver level
for its design which includes specific focus on sustainable
sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, material and
resources and innovation and design.
Sunny Dent, Vice President of Program Operations at NEF, presented
the school with an Energy Action Patrol Kit. NEF’s patrol
kit is designed to make students aware of energy and resource
use at their school and that they as students are an important
part in energy conservation. The students report on how each
classroom is conserving or wasting energy and then improve
upon their previous habits. “Attending a school that
is highly energy efficient encourages students to learn and
to strengthen their own commitment to saving energy,” says
Dent.
National Energy Foundation is a unique 501
(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and cultivating
an energy literate society through educational programs. NEF
recognizes the importance and contribution of natural resources
to our economy, national security, environment and quality
of life. Visit www.nef1.org to
