Foundation would like to thank the American Gas Association, the American
Petroleum Institute, Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, the American
Public Gas Association, and Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining for their

NEF AND UMA OUT OF THE ROCK WORKSHOP HELD
The National Energy Foundation and Utah Mining Association (UMA) partnered
again this summer to provide a workshop for second and fourth grade teachers.
The workshop presented the teachers with valuable information and resources
to help enrich their rocks and minerals curriculum. Teachers received Out
of the Rock books, a music CD, posters, a DVD, and a rocks and minerals sample
kit. The workshop was held June 20 and 21 and July 18 and 19.
EPEC AWARDS GIVEN
Sixty-five students, researchers, and community members gathered at the Florida
Solar Energy Center to celebrate their accomplishments in battling the energy
crisis. Students from the fourth through 12th grades displayed projects on
conservation and alternative fuel sources at the annual Exemplary Projects
in Energy and Conservation (EPEC) Awards. The awards are sponsored by the
National Energy Foundation, Johnson Controls, Inc., and the Space Coast Clean
Cities Coalition. Twenty-two students received the award from Brevard County
School District. Projects ranged from testing new forms of insulation to
an investigation into whether quartz crystals could be used to generate electricity.
17TH ANNUAL KEEP AWARDS A SUCCESS
The Wisconsin K-12 Energy Program (KEEP) held the 17th annual Renewable Energy
and Sustainable Living Fair in Custer, WI. This year the fair attracted over
20,000 people. The National Energy Foundation donated materials to the fair
which were distributed to 200 educators. The materials were available at
a designated educator tent which holds courses, workshops, and presentations
for educators who want to learn more about renewable energy and sustainable
living.
MURRAY POWER ANNOUNCES GAS POWER GENERATION
STATION
NEF’s educational partner Murray City Power announced the addition of
a new landfill gas reclamation power generation station which will be located
at the Salt Lake County Landfill. The landfill gas recovery system is estimated
to produce about 3 Megawatts of power each year. The estimated resource savings
would be about 99,225 barrels of oil, 12,604 acres of trees, and 209 railcars
full of coal. An estimated 633 homes can be fully powered by the gas recovery
system alone.
ENERGY BY DESIGN CONTEST KICKOFF
On September 12th, Nicor Gas Company and NEF will present the second-annual
Energy By Design Contest. Energy By Design is an instructional visual arts
competition that challenges students to effectively and artistically communicate
an energy efficiency message. Contest participation is based throughout Illinois’ Nicor
Gas service areas. Energy By Design is broken down into three age groups
Kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grades and sixth through
eighth grades.
NEF ART LIGHTS UP TUCSON CHILDREN’S
MUSEUM
Visitors to the Tucson Children’s Museum’s new “Electri-City” display
get an eyeful of the art found on NEF’s popular Electrical Generation
poster. The display is sponsored by Tucson Electric Power and shows how electricity
is generated and distributed to Tucson residents. The display is 15 feet tall
by 60 feet long and features an enlarged reproduction of the Electrical Generation
poster. For more information, visit www.tucsonchildrensmuseum.org.
